what it means to Lyons
At Lyons we have a continued commitment to our coffee growers. That’s why we’ve decided to buy green coffee from producers certified by the Rainforest Alliance. In fact, we have been buying Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM coffee for many years now, and were the first UK coffee company to do so.
what it means to the environment
The protection of native vegetation along rivers and springs ensures no agricultural residues run into water courses, and provides important breeding grounds for many animals and plants.
The planting of trees amongst coffee bushes has numerous benefits.
Trees provide a habitat for hundreds of different birds and animals, many of which are endangered or endemic to coffee-growing regions.
The increased diversity of plants means coffee bushes are less susceptible to attack from plagues, enabling a more reliable harvest year-to-year.
Trees provide structural integrity to the surrounding soil, so that less soil is washed away during monsoon or hurricane season; some trees, such as banana or brazil nut, can provide an extra source of income for farming families, as well as an additional source of food and timber.
100% Rainforest Alliance Certified
Lyons original blend, decaffeinated and beans all contain coffee grown on sustainable farms where the farmer and workers are paid a fair price for the coffee and for the work they do.
what it means to you
As a consumer of Lyons coffee, you can be safe in the knowledge that you are making a contribution to the lives of many coffee farmers, their families and surrounding communities. Because coffee is grown by farmers in developing countries, buying their produce helps to improve the local economy whilst ensuring that local development happens in a sustainable manner.
what it means to our farmers
Coffee is grown in some of the most ecologically diverse and fragile ecosystems. That is why it is so important to farm in a sustainable manner. Our farmers take extra steps to enable high-quality coffee cherries to grow amongst some of the worlds richest sources of biodiversity.
